Agensi Inovasi Malaysia (AIM), Malaysia's National Innovation Agency was set up in 2010 through an act of Parliament mandated by the Prime Minister as the nation's Innovation Agency. Its role is to create wealth through innovation and to enable the innovation eco-system of the country in areas such as Industry, Government and Education.
National Biomass Strategy 2020 (NBS 2020) was part of the initiative created by the Strategic Impact Projects unit within the Agency. The first edition of NBS 2020 was published in November 2011 with the aim to assess how Malaysia can develop new industries and high-value opportunities by utilising agricultural biomass for high value products, starting with oil palm biomass. NBS 2020 is the Malaysia's National blueprint for biomass utilisation accross sectors to help the country capture the biomass opportunity propelling the country as a high-income nation by 2020.
To drive the execution of the strategy, the National Biomass Strategy Delivery Unit led by AIM was establish in March 2012 to strengthen the execution of Malaysia's biomass strategy, NBS 2020. The unit was created to act as the single point of contact for all biomass-related activities acting as the Central Liaison for all government side of things as biomass cuts accross sectors involving many Ministries and Agencies. The Unit would also play the role of promoting biomass downstream value creation and facilitate industry to explore the biomass opportunities in Malaysia and help support research to commercialisation of higher value added biomass downstream industries.
Moving forward, the Government will continue to review the NBS 2020 and we would like to acknowledge and thank the contributions and support of all collaborating Government Ministries & Agencies, Academic and Research institutions and Private Sector partners that will be driving force behind making the National Biomass Strategy 2020 a reality.
